Once you’ve decided you want to do a yoga teacher training and even when you’ve chosen a course you love, there’s one thing that can hold you back… you! Lack of confidence and self belief often lead people to doubt their ability and think they aren’t good enough to teach yoga, even once they’ve completed a course. But here’s the thing; you don’t need to be able to do fancy poses, and any good course will give you all the knowledge, skills and experience to teach. You aren’t expected to know it all before you start!

In the video below, I share my thoughts on imposter syndrome when it comes to joining a yoga teacher training and what you can do to overcome it, with key takeaways underneath the video.

Some key takeaways from the video:

  • It’s normal to doubt yourself, and most people have these feelings before they sign up to a yoga teacher training especially with so many images online of ‘the perfect pose’!

  • Yoga is a vast subject and asanas are just a small part of this; it’s not necessary to be amazing at fancy poses to be good at teaching yoga. There are also lots of different people, places and situations you might be teaching yoga in, and they don’t suit a challenging practice

  • Often new yoga teachers will find students who are also beginners, as people who’ve been doing yoga for a long time tend to already have a teacher. So you will often find you’re teaching people who are just starting out, and they will grow as your teaching does

  • Practicing yoga yourself is important, as is having a real passion for the subject

  • A yoga teacher training is designed to give you all the skills, knowledge and experience to teach; you aren’t expected to know it all before you start

  • Having said that, as a yoga teacher you will always be a student as there is so much to keep learning!

  • Finding a course that is supportive, dedicates time to building your confidence in all aspects of yoga and encourages you to find your own area of expertise will help your confidence to grow

  • Having ongoing support available upon completion of an initial yoga teacher training (eg mentoring or further training) will help you to continue to develop as a yoga teacher

  • If you feel nervous just remember you are not alone. But I guarantee the feeling you have once you’ve completed a course will far outweigh the nerves you might have before you start!
